Burger King turns hangovers into discounts with facial recognition (marketingdive.com)

I remember once walking into a burger king after a red-eye flight to have a breakfast and to kill an hour before the appointment I arrived for. I hesitated on whether I should order a beer at 9am or not and finally decided a burger tastes better with one than without. The guy at the stand cheerfully handed me two 0.5 plastic cups of beer citing the morning 2-for-1 happy hour. My appointment went very well that morning.

Hmmm, looks like Burger King is one of those companies that still hasn't pulled out of Russia ("it's too complicated for us to figure out"):

Basic human morals are difficult and very inconvenient for some businesses.

The executives of these companies have names, such as Joshua Kobza, CEO of Burger King (Restaurant Brands International.) As CEO, this has been his choice for nearly a year. [0]

Hundreds of major multinationals have left Russia after the invasion of Ukraine, but not BK. [1]

Is there a unit in marketing courses called 'new ways to be awful'?

Seems like they have a sense of humour and don't take everything too seriously, while being realistic about their fellow human beings.

I'm sure they count the installs of their phone app in a very very serious way.

What's awful about this exactly?

> effort uses facial recognition technology to scan a consumer’s face, with the degree of hangover detected corresponding with the size of the recommended combo and discount offered.

facial recognition isnt taken lightly, users know their facial data is being used for other things

Exploiting people feeling sick to sell them low quality food.

Incentivising people to drink to the point of hangover (ie overconsumption)

> Runs through Jan 2

That's nice to see. The biggest hangover of my life was on Jan 1 when I would have done anything to eat Chipotle, but every one of them in NYC was closed...

I don’t think a whopper is what people want when they have a hangover.

...in Brazil.

I'm not sure this would fly in the US.
