Oddly beyond the fashion and trendiness of large vehicles, people buy them for their own feeling of safety turning the large vehicle market in to a sort of vicious cycle.

> The driver of the vehicle then drove over the pedestrian crossing where the child was riding north with his dad right behind him. The woman behind the wheel was not drunk and remained on the scene, so of course, no charges have been laid.
This person made a mistake and killed someone. As a society we have a system for handling this (the legal system).
Trying to "Regulate these out of existence" (as one tweet responded) is reactionary policy to a case that is handled by individual responsibility and accountability.
What if we "regulated" better bike lanes, dividers, trails, etc for 5 year olds instead of having them ride along 6 lane roads?
This person made a mistake which was 1) more likely due to the design of the vehicle (ride height) and 2) more deadly (nose shape). That's something better addressed through legislation (or other incentives) than individual responsibility.
I'm all in favor of better bike lanes, etc. as well, but the victim was in a pedestrian crossing.
> the public needs to be educated on who’s paying the most on taxes at the fuel pump, where the monies come from to build and maintain our roads. USA’s road systems aren’t built for cyclists to safely navigate
