What are computer standards actually? I have two macbook pros from 2015 running still, perfectly fine for regular "computer" usage (non-development).

Your Macbooks no longer receive (security) updates. They already have missed three MacOS releases: https://eshop.macsales.com/guides/Mac_OS_X_Compatibility

Please don't do anything security critical with them.

Other OS providers do support the devices longer. At least for core OS updates.

The last security update to Monterey was in July 2024.

9 years of OS support seems pretty good to me.

I’ve developed a habbit of automatically downvoting the top comment on most popular submissions because more often than not they are always some knee-jerk, often stupid contrarian reaction to the submission.

I don’t know when this trend started but I don’t remember it being this bad in the past.

People have been complaining about this for over a decade now. Here's some comments by pg himself, on the "middlebrow dismissal":

I guess a knee-jerk reaction demands a knee-jerk response?

No, urban areas voted Democrat once again. If anything, 2024 has really showed the widening divide between urban and rural areas, both in the US and in Europe. Probably everywhere else as well.

While it is true that democrats carried urban centers it is worth noting that their support appears to have eroded somewhat in these areas. Republicans picked up a statistically relevant number of votes there.

If I were a betting man I'd wager that switches like that are purely due to inflation. Shit's too expensive and people think that changing the party they vote into the seat of the presidency is going to change that.

Which is incredibly stupid given Elon just said in the last month that Trump’s policies would cause inflation.

I'm not a christian, but I wouldn't call this judeo-christian morals, just puritanism and purely an American mindset that is completely alien in other Western (mostly christian!) countries. I also don't associate puritanism with Israel either, so the "judeo" part is another misnomer.

I agree with you, I don't know of anybody who looked at the price combined with the form factor and concluded it will be a hit.

You might want to go back to that thread (or rather the few threads) when Vision Pro was released, and reread the responses from the fanboys.

Not sure what this fragility is. I’ve been using Neovim from the very first days, and it’s been stable throghout.

Granted I have a 10+ year old vimrc and rarely add new plugins, but saying Neovim is fragile is nonsense. Don’t install every new plugin perhaps?

Same. Neovim and plugins I use have been remarkably stable from the start

Thank you

You miss the Steve Jobs that colluded with Google and other big tech companies to keep wages down until they got sued by Department of Justice?

So it’s not me having deja-vu, yes this was posted a couple of days ago.
