I'm interested to know why ANNs wouldn't be a good fit for this? ANNs aren't my area but I have a basic grasp, and I thought they could be an interesting approach to try here?

ANNs excel in systems that are linearly separable, but have a much harder time with data that is not. Google the XOR problem, for example.
