Presumably you wouldn't feel like it's torture to sit through something like the Lion King (the original of course) as an adult? Like I'm not saying they're amazing movies, but I feel like good kids movies aren't painful for adults to watch. You can still have good writing, it just has to be something a kid can follow.

Sophisticated animation can play at multiple levels. Certainly a lot of Disney and Pixar (OK now Disney). Warner Brothers cartoons.
