The market for principal engineers with Rust experience has _really_ shifted it seems over the past 24 months. $125k was graduation salary rates a few years ago, not someone 10-20 years in.

A six figure salary seems generous, ask how much the postdocs are getting paid there. Their skills are more rare than rust for sure.

Another very important note: it’s definitely not a support role. This is a role where our team owns the intellectual contribution of what needs building and how it’s built. Just wanted to make sure that’s clear!

So it really depends on what the rest of the comp looks like.

One thing I didn’t mention in the above post is that this is _technically_ a posting for the level below Principal AND Principal. Thus, you’re seeing the very lowest salary for the position below Principal and then the highest salary for Principal as the range.

Furthermore, the way that St. Jude does ranges is a bit strange anyways (to me at least), as the ranges listed are very wide bands that apply to all positions at St. Jude.

All that being said, I would argue we’re quite competitive on salary. If it’s a concern for you but you’re interested in applying, just apply and flag to me you’d like to discuss it early on in the process.

We’re creating robots that autonomously construct buildings. We design all of our hardware and software in-house in central Amsterdam, starting with autonomous bricklaying robots.

We have built a machine vision pipeline that can achieve sub-millimetre localisation on construction sites, and a software stack that lets us prototype on the fly. I have sent many applications over the years with no responses. I have a masters and two bachelors from UW-Madison, which is arguably a top school in the area since UChicago doesn't have an engineering school (I also got into Michigan and Northwestern for context). I've build spacecraft for the Space Force and I've worked in latency-sensitive data and ML applications, and have plenty of C/C++ experience.

I know I sound very jealous right now (I am lol) but every time I look for SWE jobs in Chicago I see HRT paying to run ads, but I've never gotten an email back. Is this an Ivy-only company or something? What sort of stuff are you looking for?

What I think happens behind the scenes is similar to elite universities: there's a strong desire to maintain a high rejection rate. It's probably a KPI of the HR team to get a high number of applicants, so their HR team goes to the bottom of the ocean and the top of mountains to paste job ads. It is however not at all a sign that they need people.

Beyond technical skills, we’re looking for strong problem-solving, communication, and a collaborative mindset. It’s crazy how often SerpApi posts here. What’s going on? Either they’re scaling faster than Tesla (spoiler: they’re not), or they’re constantly churning through employees. If you’re thinking about applying, do yourself a favor and ask questions like:

+ Why are there so many open roles so often?

+ What’s the typical employee tenure?

+ What’s the actual work environment like after onboarding?

Posting jobs every month like clockwork says a lot, and none of it screams stability.

The onboarding period is very generous of time and focuses on learning about the company and the offerings and has you utilise the APIs in a number of creative ways so you can experience it in some of the ways that customers are using it and challenges they may face.

It’s less than we were targeting and are still hiring. Around 40-50 this year.

Regarding onboarding and tenure, we have virtually 0% turn over so far - which is one of the strongest if not the strongest metric for management performance - outside of us terminating people.
