Discontinuity works in both directions. A few decades ago, I knew a single mother who used her large employer's Free Commute bus passes to get to & from work every day...until the day when her kid got really sick at school. And her employer's "Plan E" emergency transportation plans proved themself utterly worthless.

Mom's emotions told her that she cared far more about her kid than about the money or the planet - so thereafter, she always drove her big SUV to & from work.
