Show HN: Graphs, a daily data visualization puzzle (graphs.world)

Hi everyone! Graphs is the intersection of data visualization and the daily web puzzle genre (Wordle, NYT Mini Crossword, Connections, etc.).

Every day, you are given a nameless graph and 5 options to select the right dataset it is representing. Upon winning, you can access the underlying dataset and other info + maintain a streak and stats. It's super simple - check out today's chart and you should be able to get the gist quickly.

My email + twitter account (@graphsgame) is on the page, would love a feedback or a follow.

Really cool project. I went through all 40 puzzles, only missed a couple :(

Some friendly feedback: maybe add a way to quickly go to previous/next puzzle directly, like arrows on the side of the screen. Modal with "play" button reloads on every puzzle, so you have to press the button every time, I think it should come up only once on start up. I see that it takes some time for the graph to load, but modal should close itself then. Also, I'm not sure if it is a timezone issue on my side or calendar in archive is off by one day: you need to click the next day to get puzzle for the prior day. Not really important, but August 16th puzzle is mislabeled (atmospheric ppm. vs temperature anomaly).

Thanks for putting this together, I'll try to play again sometime.

Thank you for the feedback - you playing and taking the time to write all of this is super helpful and I really appreciate it.

The option to move quickly between puzzles totally makes sense - I added in buttons below the "Graphs title" to do so. Does it work well from your PoV?

I also made it so that the "play" button only pops up on your first graph of each day, afterwards it will not impede you as you binge :)

I fixed the August 16th labeling (regex strikes again) too, nice find.

The date thing is almost certainly due to varying timezones of players - they're all around the world at this point. I'll have to think more deeply about how to fix that, but it is 100% going to happen.

Thanks again for all the feedback and for playing!

I also trimmed down the graph rendering so it doesn't take as much time (now that the play pop up isn't in the way)

I enjoy this so far. If you had a way to indicate Number of tries in the calendar result (I understand color alone is difficult with Red/Green colorblindness, but, something like the following):

Green = 1st try Yellow = 2nd Try Orange = 3rd Try Red = Fail

That would be pretty cool to see.

Or maybe a superscript by the date (though if you're using some pre-made component that could be harder to implement, but something like that might help colorblind users over my color-only approach). Or you could use a "number of dots system" (but again maybe not easy if a component).

Anyways, this is really cool, thanks for making it!

This is a great idea and in the backend it tracks how many tries it took to win, so the data is there. Also, NYT crosswords does this similarly where you can see on the calendar how far into each puzzle you got visually.

Let me take a stab at this...I'll let you know when it's been updated.

Appreciate the feedback, really good insight!

Tried my hand at an update on the calendar. Thoughts? The colors were proving tricky

I've been staring at it too long and can't tell if it looks good or bad

Hey that's great, It's a little aliased looking but being able to see how many tries it took is cool! I like how you have it looking like a countdown timer :)

Also thanks for listening and responding so fast, that's awesome

Seems broken? Pressing play isn't doing anything for me

Hm, what pops up when you click play (or anywhere outside of the pop up)?

The 10 month period for dates is annoying, as is the lack of tick marks to mark where the labels match the data.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll look into fixing this. Are you referencing a graph that had a 10 month period as the x axis?

I added in an option via a settings button (up top) to toggle grid lines...hoping that is a good start!

This is reallyyyy well done, mate! Thank you for sharing it with the world.

Neat idea, I enjoyed this and was proud to get today's right! Great work.

Thanks for enjoying, James!

Aug 31 extremely hard. Aug 30 comically easy.

Still looking for that Goldilocks zone ha

Well I'm addicted to this. I love it!

Appreciate the kind words!
