The alternative I tried (successfully):

1. Switch your payment method to PayPal.

2. Cancel the subscription using the Paypal UI

(That was a couple of years ago so I’m not sure if this works)

This leaves some kind of outstanding balance on your Adobe account from what I remember, which I suspect they can chase you for with debt collection.
