Why wouldn't you trust Apple now? It would have to be a huge conspiracy with all Apples employees. And you can easily just listen to the network and see if they do it or not.

I find it somewhat hard to believe that wouldn’t be in contravention of some law or other. Or am I wrong?

Of course we can then worry that companies are breaking the law, but you have to draw the line somewhere… and what have they to gain anyway?
