It's no wonder we've never encountered advanced civilizations. Consider that we've had satellites in the sky less than 100 years, and there is concern over them affecting the Earth's magnetic field. Keep doing kind of stuff for a thousand times longer - only 100K years, which is not that long in planetary history - and imagine what crazy effects we could have on the planet.
