Ask HN: My partner gets rejected from jobs and we don't know why

Hello all,

My partner is having trouble finding work as a Junior Frontend Developer and we're not sure why. She has applied to dozens of positions and so far only received rejections. She has a Masters in Design, but worked as a Freelancer on Shopify stores for the last few years. She's a good Web Designer with knowledge of JavaScrip, React and D3.

For reference, we are based in Germany (although she is originally from Mexico). Her German skills are improving but not quite there for business conversations.

Here is her GitHub which also links to her Website: https://github.com/yurith-rubio And her Resume: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Rp2aUglkh3Z0ID4SyTcSv2DMginOG58k

We would be grateful for any tips on how to improve her chances. Thanks!

Many junior front end developers describe the same problems. The jobs dried up. Do you follow the news? No reflection on the individual, but since you wrote “we’re not sure why” you might not know about the layoffs, or the large number of juniors chasing a few jobs.

Thanks, I'm aware that the market is difficult. However, there still seem to be many jobs posts. That's why I'm wondering if it's something else too.

Companies post job openings for all kinds of reasons. They may not intend to hire. More likely they don’t want to hire junior people. It costs employers very little to keep the funnel open just in case.

It seems you want to believe the problem is with her or that it could be fixed with a few changes? Sorry if I'm misjudging but if that's the case it might bring some bad relationship dynamics soon, not related exclusively to the job hunting

I can't comment on the question as I'm not a designer and not in Germany, but there's a typo on the GitHub page: "tought" -> "thought".

Thanks, good spot!

Can't access the resume, is it in German or in English?

I don't know how Germany works but in a lot of European countries using an English resume would be a big no no.
