For folks who have not been to India, as someone who has lived there till I was 24, India is anti-Muslim, Hindu Supremacist the same way US is White-Supremacist, Anti Black. This is not a gotcha, this is actually a very close and accurate analogy. We do not have the baggage of past enslavement, quite the opposite actually since Hindu’s faced a lot of discrimination under Mughal rule that has been whitewashed in the common man’s historical conception, but alas the past is the past and in the present Muslims are not in any enviable position.

They are the underclass of the Indian society for the most part. Not well educated, generally much poorer than middle class and often quite a bit more violent and barbaric than average (which is not that big of a problem as long as you diffuse any misunderstandings when dealing with them early enough). They are also a perpetual “vote-bank” of the Congress which constantly gives them welfare and advantages and holds the mantle of being their protector against the Indian Masses. Do they need that protection? India is far more rural than USA, and the rural population is quite prejudiced against Muslims (which may not be that common in rural US against blacks anymore?). When riots happen, it’s always rural lower middle class Hindus and Muslims. Among the educated upper class Indians (mostly Brahmins and a few other castes thrown to mix), they don’t see religion, they brag how many Muslim friends they have, they are perpetual supporters and enables of the underclass and the BJP government in anti muslim in the same way the republicans are anti black, which depending on your point of view may be nothing at all or extremely horrific.

In India the right wing has won politics through just superior planning and execution. The middle class Indians were fed up with essentially the Brahmin Dynasty of congress (something I often find many educated Indians don’t realize. Which caste do you think Tiwari’s Mishra’s, Prasad’s , Chaudhary’s, Tripathi’s, and of course Gandhi’s who’ve been in the Congress leadership for decades belonged to?) who were perpetually maintaining power by putting the underclass against the middle class. The Congress also has a leadership vacuum with many of the leaders quitting, forming other parties and generally going against congress leadership, so we have a left wing that’s disunited and disorganized and a right wing that is very firmly organized and a population that wants more economic growth and effective government. I do think the left wing will eventually get into power and start to dominate again essentially since all the upper echelons of Indian society are left wing, there is no quality right wing thought to speak of in India. Right wing maintains through brute force politics and often don’t have modern justifications for the policies they support , they will often give religious justifications which no educated Indian will agree with. If you are young ambitious, well educated Indian, the kind that joins tech, finance, consultancy etc you are almost certainly secular, Congress supporting and left wing, there is no Indian Ben Shapiro, Heritage Society etc to infect your mind with illiberal thoughts. The fact that even without this, the right wing has remained firmly in control is a testament to how rural India is, how the lower middle class have a culture that’s survived generations and in the left wing view, how backward and unenlightened India is.
