Tablets may not have replaced TVs but tablets altered the trajectory for TV and TV watching hugely. I do not believe TV manufacturers expected to be solely the agents of large displays, They thought 3D was going to be a licence to print money.
I bet TV makers really did not enjoy learning that even android TV was by now really just another view of somebody else's revenue stream and just costs for them: keep up with the pace of CVE and upgrade or .. they just use their tablet.
AR won't happen in the mainstream. Not with this tech. I see only investor influencers and nerdy "I can now have a virtual girlfriend" fellas excited about this. The same crowd that was getting psychotic over Web3's potential like a year ago.

Meta hasn't gotten this far by copying Apple. They got this far by doing things Apple doesn't, like developing first-party experiences and focusing on the low-end market. They are intentionally running in the other direction, and have already drummed up a market 20 million strong without so much as an announcement from Apple.
If their first gen headset outsells the first gen Quest, it would be like the Lisa outselling the Apple II.
