E=mC^2 so they are interchangeable. Atomic bombs work because the fusion products have a slightly smaller mass than the matter before the reaction, and even a tiny amount of mass multiplied by the speed of light squared becomes a really big amount of energy.

Having said that, I too am wondering about conservation of mass/energy and how that pans out with this new conjecture.
