Air India particularly has a terrible reputation in all my travel experience. It doesn't surprise me they were callous in responding to this horrible incident. I have had two incidents, albeit much lesser grievous, to share about their ground staff & cabin crew conduct:
* On AI flight from Chicago O'Hare to New Delhi, my hand luggage had a set of Feynman lectures which made it go past slightly over 7 kilos (less than 8 for sure). Staff refused to accommodate it & my bag was already checked in. I had to let go of my bookset which was promptly scooped up by the same booking staff, who admitted sheepishly she has a college going kid & it "might come handy". That moment felt like daylight robbery.
* On AI flight from London, I had booked Economy plus, but I was shunted out of my seat unceremoniously & put in regular economy to accommodate a family flying together. Since I had paid extra, I asked if I could be given the bulkhead at least, which was refused. I was again shifted from my aisle to a different seat in middle row to accomodate an elderly gentleman. I asked to file a complaint - and they gave a sheet of paper, which I am certain got trashed because I never received a follow up from airline. I was not reimbursed for difference of fare between Economy Plus & Economy.
Spotting a rodent in the cabin & clogged toilets were also an issue on a separate domestic flight.
