I know that this article is about Google, but the same arguments apply to digital media bought on almost all major platforms -- Amazon, Netflix, Apple all have similar shady practices. If you want to truly own a media file for "life", there are only two options: (i) buy a BluRay/DVD/CD-ROM version and rip it yourself for posterity and easy access, (ii) pirate it.
