There is no secret recipe to career building. You can do great doing dirty work. You can end up nowhere working on trendy things. It's all about rebounding and using what you have learned to move forward.

The most impactful thing I have ever done for my own career is having an idea of what I wanted for an horizon a bit longer than just my next job and being very open about it. There are plenty of people around you who have vested interest into helping you and can't if they don't know what you are looking for.
