Ask HN: Low-Carbon VPS Hosting?
2 points by drcongo on Aug 4, 2022 | hide | past | favorite | 7 comments
Recently, we (a small digital agency working mostly with non-profit orgs) are getting asked more and more often about low/no-carbon hosting. We currently host all our production sites on Digital Ocean and staging sites on Hetzner, I've reached out to DO in the past about green hosting options but it's apparently not something they're particularly interested in. I know of some green hosting options for bare metal, but I'm having a hard time finding anything DOish, VPS that we can spin up and kill at will. Anyone have any recommendations?

Google Cloud is pushing hard to reach this goal https://www.google.com/about/datacenters/cleanenergy/

I believe their us-central datacenters (iowa) are almost all wind energy. They are actually pretty transparent about it, the details are in the last link in the first paragraph

All of the VPS providers that I know of that say they are green are just buying carbon offsets. Some of them have solar panels on their datacenters but that barely makes up a tiny fraction of the power they use. I do not know of any datacenters that have hundreds of acres of solar panels and rooms of batteries and inverters to entirely power their fleet but I could be wrong. Dig deep if a company claims to use green energy unless you are including carbon offsets as an acceptable compromise.

That's a great distinction, thanks. I suspect that most of our clients would find it an acceptable compromise.

Greenhost[0] uses IronMountain's Amsterdam datacenter, which claims to use 100% renewable energy.

Fantastic, almost exactly what I'm looking for, thank you.

Found those, seems to be well established +19y on the market - https://krystal.uk/
