I agree with both the article and the commenters who are vehemently disagreeing. We need to understand how planning is used by different people for different goals:

1. Vision: setting long-term goals and speculating on the path that will best meet those goals.

2. Incentives and accountability: trying to make sure a team delivers X in Y time.

Setting a long-term vision is of course extremely valuable - find me a great founder or leader who doesn't have a long-term vision! It's the trying to force X to happen in Y time that increasingly breaks down over longer timelines.
