man - the amount of headphones I go through, there's no way this is worth it! $1,500 a pair!!

What if there was a way to get the perfect fit (ie just a piece of rugged rubber) and then be able to attach any old headphones to that?

It would be the best of both worlds, much cheaper, more resilient.
