Thanks - it's easy to forget after working with basic datatypes (char, string, ...) for a long time that the individual symbols themselves have their own history and encoded meanings; some retained, some implied, some likely debatable, some perhaps lost.

I wonder whether there have been any efforts to create an etymological dictionary for Unicode characters.
