I’m sure most have have of this trope (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4627373) and that’s kinda how I feel right now.

A lot of jobs I see at my YoE are senior level and use terms like “domain expert” that I just can’t read and say “yeah this is me”. I just can’t imagine performing in roles like this. I’m not an expert at anything, besides maybe figuring out how to figure out things I want to do. At the same time, I don’t feel much like a junior or anything. I have very cursory understanding of a lot of stuff, but a large swath of it is useless because I don’t have any experience back it up.

What are the typical moves for someone in this sort of situation.

Doesn’t matter. There are two things that you need to land a job: technical competence and compatibility. In most cases a job description will claim to prioritize the former (and will sort candidates to that effect), but that’s actually bullshit at interviewing. People want to believe they are objective but in the end shared opinions will almost always win the day.

NEver mind being expert for now, what are you interested in? As in, what sort of things do you write code to do, or if your interest is just in programming languages themselves, do you like making tools or thinking up how languages could be better, or...?
