Nobody at CNN bothered to ask officials in the Netherlands whether any of it were true, because it wasn’t.
The Netherlands, in fact, released a nuanced 10-year-plan dubbed Perspective 2030 last October to explore the various issues arising from increased tourism over the next decade. No new policy initiatives regarding tourism promotion have been enacted, though, at the national or local level. The only change was taking down the one sign in a congested spot and warning people about damaging tulips.
I wonder what the rest of the Netherlands thinks about this. Maybe they like having Amsterdam as the honeypot? Most vacationers confining themselves to Amsterdam (IME) are not there for the Scheepvaart, and many aren’t the sort I’d necessarily want running around my own town expecting to fulfill the same expectations they had in Amsterdam.
