Overdraw of blood would certainly impair a crab's longevity - even continued blood loss from technician error causing a fatal bleeding wound would do it. Analysis and care might dramatically reduce this loss. The new synthetic should be assessed and approved if it is OK for the use. Make me wonder if the current producer has lobbied to deny approval for crass purposes?
