To me it looks like cameras everywhere has been a good thing. Looking at the current Police Brutality videos coming out has rightfully caused people to want to stop that happening. I feel a lot safer in areas with security cameras. In the building I live in some items have been stolen which cameras helped find the thief, also some crazy lawsuit was shut down because we had a video of the guy falling over deliberately.
I'd feel a lot safer if the feeds from all those security cameras could not be abused -- like inaccurate face recognition that is shared by Google's doorbells with local police departments, like state driver license photo databases sold to any buyer willing to pay that may then be used for any purpose, like the terribly inaccurate face recognition rate of dark faces, and worst of all, the inability of citizens to defend ourselves against non-standardized uncalibrated technology sold to and abused by careless law enforcement agencies by for-profit tech providers.
No. So long as law enforcement can't be bothered to check their 'facts' and unscrupulous makers of camera-based tech remain unaccountable for disabilities inherent in their products, I will remain convinced that all use of cameras and face recognition are knowingly abusive and irresponsible. As such, they should be outlawed until the people have MUCH more oversight of our overseers and their enablers.
The examples you give are of someone getting caught doing something, not from having been prevented doing so. Is the right conclusion then to feel safer?
that's not the solution, that's how you enforce something that is broken (similar technocratic positions led to DNA testing being no longer questioned in a court). The actual solution is to ban it completely.
