If the list of hashed URLs is relatively static, what’s to prevent Apple from caching this information on their own CDN?

If this not possible in China due to the Great Firewall, at least it could be done in other areas. Unless it’s against Google/Tencent’s TOS’es?

(i) It is not static. It actually changes very frequently. (ii) You would get a fair amount of cache misses, so a proxy if anything would be a better approach. (iii) The providers do not allow it (source: have tried to work with at least one of them). I am not sure exactly why they want IP, but the sense I got was it did have something to do with training their models.

That makes me doubt the effectiveness of their k-anonymity scheme.

I think it’s worth using this momentum to ask Google to clarify what, if anything, they do with IPs. Same with Tencent.

The other option is to just proxy the request and hide IP address. In fact they should just offer that as a service to their users.

They do this for Siri and bing.
