Oracle and IBM are better known for killing things they acquire than enhancing them. The money doesn't outweigh the executive overhead.
And it's not that vmware is bad, it's that they're big, enterprise'y, and slow. They'll make their money selling VM management software to companies that can't adapt to the cloud. But that's what they do - they make their money selling software to companies that can't adapt.
Even if it was Oracle or IBM, big money solves some problems.
