> But the tech simply isn't mature.

I guess this is your informed opinion that comes after reading about Tesla's autopilot crashes. And I share that opinion.

But I have the feeling that Waymo's system is much more mature than Tesla's. Let's see.

Why are "feelings" used to justify important policy decisions when the data suggests the technology is dangerous?

> But I have the feeling that Waymo's system is much more mature than Tesla's. Let's see.

No way. Not even close by any factor. Tesla have real data from real people driving real cars across the world. On the other hand, Waymo have data only from their Test vehicles and augmented scenarios.

Data from people driving their own cars is much less relevant than data from your own autonomous driving system driving among real drivers in many different situations (eg urban driving). AFAIK, Waymo has much more of the latter.

Tesla has much more of the latter. Their driving system is already deployed and used in consumer vechicles, each of them able to collect that data. Watch "Autonomy day".

Tesla has more data only for the very few situations where you can use the autopilot.

Autopilot ON has logged a billion miles. So, not really "few situations".

How many of those billion miles were logged in urban driving?

There is a youtube channel callled "Tesla Driver" where they put out regular videos driving through urban UK (on autopilot of course). The streets do not look like the center of New York, but not like a constant highway either. So yes tesla absolutely collects tons of data of how their autopilot behaves in urban areas.

This is pretty surprising to me, as AFAIK the current "autopilot" isn't designed to work in urban areas. Anyway, thank you for the update.

Good questions. Need to check. On the other hand, I think Tesla is always collecting driving data
