We are actively going towards this vision, although the closest we have now is Alexa/Google Home/etc.

It's 2019, and this isn't a solved problem yet, although there's work being done on it.


If you live in any kind of larger home (I live in an apartment that originally had three bedrooms, but one was integrated into the living room), you're probably going to be doing the wall-plug wifi repeater thing. So my home has three wifi spots with different names, and dwm trivially knows where I am thanks to a shell script.

One might argue it's not really a problem, more like a solution looking for a problem (and bringing many problems of its own).

Some interesting implications for the "attention economy" here. Companies that sell advertising aren't going to want to fade into the background. And indeed one of the biggest, Facebook, is working on VR for this.

More or less a direct mapping to the smartphone and smartwatch.

.. and this is the modern tablet. (In 1991 "workstation sized" displays could well have still been 14"; we've now converged on laptops being about 13" as well as the iPad Pro)
