The only exception that I can think of is GPS (not the receivers, the system). Most people simply know that it involves satellites somehow. That system delights me in its cleverness, effectiveness, and scalability.

Nuclear magnetic resonance, as used to make MRI scans, is pretty damn impressive if you ask me.
