They are. ITER was designed to be as large as the engineering allows. But that is Expensive.

The groups at MIT are trying to take advantage of the fact that newer superconductors allow you to get to ITER levels with smaller designs. However, those are Not Cheap either.



Not cheap, but about an order of magnitude cheaper than ITER.
