On a HN thread about how pictures taken of the moon by NASA in the 60s were taken with film, developed in space, and then scanned and beamed back to Earth, brought up a lot of comments about great 20th Century engineering such as a bowling alley.

My question is what other great examples of 20th Century engineering do you have?
