I don't get it.

"Autopilot" aka adaptive cruise control is going to continue failing since drivers think it's more than that.

More people are going to die in spectacular, headlining fashion.

Imagine if that was a schoolbus instead of a firetruck.

Even Tesla's "non-autopilot" crashes are front page news because it's such a story.

Every front page story whittles away a little at the magical Tesla brand.

A brand, which in the midst of production issues, capitalization issues, and leadership issues is their major asset that could carry them to the other side.

Turn the thing off if hands aren't on the wheel, end of story.

I assume you mean that Tesla should do this automatically.

Spot on. IMO calling this "Autopilot" was a big marketing misstep-- it should've been called "Advanced cruise control" or something along those lines.

"Autopilot" yells "this car can drive itself", which is great marketing, but if your consumers have that idea no matter how much you warn them they'll assume it's probably not that dangerous to take their hands off the wheel and leave the car unchecked for a minute.

To make things even worse, there have been several instances (mentioned on Reddit and other forums) where Tesla doesn't register you having your hand on the car. You will actually have to nudge the wheel a bit. This is not universal and can differ from car to car. So just putting your hands on your car might not be good enough.
