I think you're underestimating the improvement you get from dropping SATA and overestimating how much room for improvement is left for typical users - when the i/o times get to the level of being perceptually unimportant, changes to them don't matter as much and developers are less incentivized to make things as i/o efficient. HDD to SSD type of change is hard to repeat.
