Unless you can buy a laptop with no OS for less than I can buy a laptop with Windows, buying from Linux ecosystem is going to be essentially an act of charity.

You frequently can, at least for Lenovo/Dell/Asus laptops.

IIRC Dell is now charging less for Linux than Windows.

Do you have a link? I'm in the market for a new laptop right now and a cheaper Dell with Linux installed sounds optimal.

Here's an example of one of the options, it's ~$100 less if configured with Ubuntu-16.04: http://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/dell-laptops-and-noteboo...

Canonical posted a short review of the available Dell models recently: https://insights.ubuntu.com/2017/11/14/new-dell-precision-ma...

The prices I see on this link are on the other side of $1k where a perfectly adequate for Windows (and adequate for Linux with 5 hours of fighting) laptop can be bought for less than $300.

That the high-power laptop has a $100 discount doesn't seem like the incentive I was originally mentioning. I mean, sure, if and only if you were going to buy a laptop of that power level, then buying from the "Linux ecosystem" but otherwise, it seems like a moral gesture.
