Agreed, Apple's iPhone deployment wasn't the cleverest to begin with (lack of 3G was stupid), however I don't believe Apple would have waited until 3.2 to include SMS. That's like waiting until the 2012 Tesla Roadster to include the brakes.
The API has no restriction on the number of touch points Apple could offer, and current hardware caps out at five. I think it's safe to say at least five
Also, I found no reference to video chat, backplane cameras or backgrounding--that must be from a source closer to Cupertino.
