> I'm a Trump supporter so take this with a grain of salt.

Immediately predict lame rhetoric about how bad the media is.

> When he said the media was dishonest, he was referring to CNN, WaPo and the mainstream media (excluding Fox News).

Oh right, the bastion of correct reporting, fucking Fox News. Questioning Obama's birth certificate. Warning about his terrorist fist jabs. Rightly admonishing him for asking for Dijon Mustard.

> As a litmus test... the fact that almost every liberal in America is yelling at Trump more than they're yelling at the DNC

The current president vs something that happened 8 months ago.

> doubled-down on Hillary the loss wasn't just technical––it was a landslide[1]

It wasn't a fucking landslide. 13th closest election in history by electoral college, massive loss in the popular vote. This is why Trump supporters need a fucking reality check and should maybe try some of that mainstream media. You are hooked on his propaganda and lies.

You're busy in this thread, but you only seem to bring anger and ridicule. Maybe calm down a bit and foster useful discussions?

But looking through your history it seems like that may not be what you want.

> massive loss in the popular vote

Can we stop talking about the popular vote? As long as people know the electoral college is what matters, the popular vote is tainted. People who live in states that are not going to swing either a) don't vote or b) vote their ideal candidate.

HN is a place where we are typically critical of any studies methodology yet we hang on to a number as skewed as the popular vote. Imagine if you were polled and told "No matter what you vote your state is going red/blue. How do you plan to vote?" That is basically the question and it means the popular vote means very little in the end.

> First, tell me the numbers for electoral votes. I would consider that a landslide

Then you don't understand what a landslide, electoral or otherwise, is. Of the post-WWII elections, virtually all were bigger wins, electorally, the exception being both of George W. Bush's elections, Nixon's 1968 election, and Kennedy's 1960 election.

Actually, while WWII is often used as a breakpoint for considering modern elections, the same is true if you extend the timeframe to post-WWI.

You may not consider 232 (CLINTON) -– 306 (TRUMP) a landslide but I certainly do.

If you do, you rob "landslide" of any substantive meaning -- virtually every Presidential election is a "landslide" by that standard, and Trump's is the fifth weakest in 100 years.

I'm having trouble seeing where in your link there is any evidence presented that Obama's birth certificate is forged. It's an article about some guy saying it was forged.

Your evidence is Arpaio? lol.

I guess the newspaper announcement was faked 60 years ago too?

Seriously dude, drop it. It's pathetic and sad. Hundreds of experts have looked at it, of course there is 1 racist goon who will say otherwise.

> Wasn't the previous Canadian prime minister at least as xenophobic as Trump?

God no. They passed a (bullshit) law saying that they could revoke the Canadian citizenship of someone under specific circumstances. You had to be a dual citizen (or eligible?) and commit one of a few crimes.

- obtaining citizenship by fraud (this I think is entirely reasonable) - committing an act of terrorism - treason - taking up arms against Canada

The liberals repealed some of this already (IIRC everything but the portions about fraudulently obtaining citizenship).

> What will prevent Canadians from out-crazying the US in the next major election?

We have a sane electoral system and just generally aren't as crazy.

A correction to what you said: Bill C-6 (which undoes the damage done by the conservatives) has been stuck in the senate for many months. I followed it closely, and it was a bit disheartening. Checkout the forums of the website canadavisa.com to see people's frustrations.

I'm a Canadian and I am very worried about the future of our country. Due to various factors, new laws affecting large swathes of the population can get effected very quickly. What starts off as reasonable laws can get co-opted into something very crazy (any student of history should know this well). I echo the concern made by a few others that we are one election away from craziness. Not sure how things are going to go at this point. As a visible minority, I am scared.

I'm so sick of the "moving to Canada" talk. You get to come if we say so, not because it's your backup plan.

I like living where I am now, and I don't want to leave to go back to Canada and earn drastically less with the same (optimistically) expenses. While working on less interesting stuff.

Let's be honest, Canada (like any other country in the world) is always happy when a wealthy company comes to invest and open an office, especially if it's to recruit qualified workers.

The equation is pretty simple: 1. It will bring jobs to Canadians (the offices won't be made only of expats, for many reasons) 2. Employees will spend their salary in Canada, and pay taxes in Canada 3. Knowledge: interns/employees go work to these companies then may move to Canadians companies or create their own with the knowledge they acquired

Basically it's a big win for the receiving country. Just ask Ireland how it worked for them.

I'm not talking about Facebook opening an office in Vancouver, I'm talking about "I'm moving to Canada if Trump wins".

It seems like you have no clue what's going on and what this article is about. It's not about Trump winning, it's about Trump having started to do its shit and forcing companies to find a way to make their employees work since the US doesn't accept them anymore.

The idea is that some VC money follows them to Canada, which has always been what you guys lacked in comparison to SV.

So this will be good for native (??) Canadians too.

Will it? I gather not all are fond of what such money has done for San Francisco and the Bay Area in general.

Is this about the rising cost of housing? My understanding is that it has more to do with nimbyism and proposition 13 than just engineering wages pricing out locals. That said, I don't know about the situation in Canada, so maybe someone can shed some light.

Man makes business out of identifying market, finding supplier, ordering product, reselling at higher price.

Amazing.

And all of the "I have an idea I just need a technical cofounder" (ie. management and sales and wannabees of every company) cried out in horror, tears, and injustice !

because it opens up the options to sponsor you for a green card.

> F1 students are not American citizens and are not entitled to an immigration pathway through employment

American citizens would be entitled to an immigration pathway?

> America is already crowded.

America isn't crowded. America is mostly pretty empty. http://www2.census.gov/geo/pdfs/maps-data/maps/thematic/us_p...

The question isn't how much desert or glacier a country has. It's whether a family can afford a place to live and if you can get where you're going in the city without waiting forever in traffic. America is failing badly at both those essential criteria.

You're including Austin, TX (Semiconductor) in that search. Their CA engineer salaries are much lower. Also, I wonder about that data. I've seen bigger CA databases that have more records and lower salaries. Also, look at what AirBNB pays their H1B's.

Edit: Sorry, going to retract this. My data is a few years old. It seems like they have started paying market rates.

Haven't we allowed minority religions facing persecution historically?

Is this "I'm a christian so please let me in" or "I'm a christian/wrong kind of muslim (sunni vs shiite) and facing persecution so please let me in"?

Yes, but you distract from the main issue; religious persecution is one of many criteria for asylum. Now it is the only criterion for a waiver grant.

Furthermore, it is not clear that the Sunni/Shia split meets the standard defined in this document (though I agree that it absolutely should).

No other reason for persecution is stated. Text:

    (b) Upon the resumption of USRAP admissions, the Secretary of
State, in consultation with the Secretary of Homeland Security,
is further directed to make changes, to the extent permitted by
law, to prioritize refugee claims made by individuals on the
basis of religious-based persecution, provided that the religion
of the individual is a minority religion in the individual's
country of nationality. Where necessary and appropriate, the
Secretaries of State and Homeland Security shall recommend
legislation to the President that would assist with such
    prioritization.

> Surely, you must be joking. WP has been pretty blazen in disregard in their "facts" during the election and have most blatantly been pushing an anti-Trump agenda under Bezos's guide

Can we please not allow HN to become the type of place where garbage like this is allowed? Pointing out bias is one thing, but the campaign against reputable news sources is ridiculous. If you believe they are wrong then provide evidence, any sort of alternative viewpoint.

The wholesale writing off of news (previously reputable) news organizations is nothing more than a brazen attempt to weaken trust in the media and remove their ability to act as a check on government actions. The washington post is "fake news", they can't be trusted, the story they just broke which is clear and reliable evidence of watergate level misconduct is obviously a lie.
