Am I cynical for thinking there would be no punishment or accountability?

It is not socially acceptable to point fingers or raise suspicion of anyone but the western man. The lack of honest and genuine conversation is concerning.

He was the first man to come back from space alive (disclaimer: two members of my family worked for the space program) and what's really peculiar about his case is that he was chosen not only based on his undoubtedly stellar qualifications as a pilot but also because he was a handsome chap.

Everything I’ve read about Gagarin suggests that he was a phenomenal person. People liked him as a person. He was both smart and kind. Add in his personal bio and it’s not hard to see why the Soviet leaders picked him.

There was also the purely physical qualification that he was only 157 cm tall. Size matters when sending payloads to space.

Damn, it bothers me that your comment was down voted. Are there no consequences for those who unjustly down vote?

In fact considering what I know of dictatorship regimes you could be right. They are generally big on showmanship and public image, with scant regard for human life.

Absolutely. It was all about PR. Still is but no substance to back it up in the least.

I still have all of my code from '95-'97. Wrote 3D tetris, and a flight simulator among other things.

I am relearning TP and DOS as a hobby. I would be interested if you decided to share you code.

I lost all of my TP programs from '92-'02 as the result of a dramatic neglicence.

Absolutely using two different laptops. One for work, one for personal activities. What also helps, if you've got a personal project on the side, to switch gears is between work and project, either read a book or watch an episode of something silly. Then dive back into computer world.

I've got a few stories like this. One was with Peloton. People buying expensive stationary bikes to work out at home? Ridiculous! )))

My current fave - Pulumi + JS + Ramda

I'm absolutely in love with pulumi. Recommended it to a CTO I was interviewing with literally an hour ago!

Diving into functional programming has rekindled my passion. Elm in particular.

Why is this at the top of HN?

It's common for quirky, easy-to-understand technical posts, for example that cover something familiar from an unfamiliar angle, to do well on HN.

This is a FAQ now, I think.

The answer is a combination of:

* somebody submitted it

* people upvoted it

* the algorithm weights new more than old

* lots of people have things to say about it, including recommendations for other tools, neat hacks, and observations on general utility

It goes to show that terminal fanatics still haven't find a simple solution to this problem even after 50 years.

I've been asking myself that question more and more. It seems HN has been slowly becoming a Reddit-lite. There are significantly more low-quality "thanks! this is great!" comments and "witty" one-liners everywhere.

Not to mention posts like these.

People have been saying this since before Startup News was renamed to Hacker News in 2007: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13852
