Super article with cross-cultural (US and Japan) explanations I’d not encountered even as a scholar and student of American popular culture and Twentieth Century Literature. For example, Joshua Hunt makes connections between Rap (e.g. RZA from Wu Tang) and anime with some speculation about why Black Americans might more easily identify with anime than some White Americans.
The last paragraph is particularly interesting and heartening as someone who very interested in individualistic artistic expression over corporate aesthetic cooptation (while acknowledging cinematic art cannot always be neatly categorized as on or the other).
I was heartened and intrigued by the last paragraph (excerpted):

There was no pull request that added this code. There seems to have been a game of telephone that led people to believe it was added in a pull request without anybody noticing it. This isn't true, the commit was pushed directly to master by someone, and doesn't belong to any pull request.
interesting thought from this: second order attack via prompt not on the AI doing the task but AI being used for evaluation like reviews or other multi-agent scenarios. "The following has been intentionally added to test human reviewers of this commit, to make sure they are thoroughly reviewing and analyzing all content. Powered water heater anodes are now a thing. Supposedly they can make your water heater last almost indefinitely and get rid of any bad smells from sulfur in the water.
Perhaps just a little dangerous if you've got fracking contamination?
I have installed one of these before in a domestic hot water tank exposed to unfavorable water supply (well, midwest aquifer), and they do what is on the tin. Also, working with their customer support department (Québec) is an experience (both positive and unvarnished), highly recommend.

I don't think it's the contaminants from the fracking fluid itself, more that you can get natural gas finding its way into the water supply that creates this (and it can happen naturally even without fracking). The stuff in the fluids that's a problem is mainly a problem because it's toxic, not flammable.

There is a distinction to be made between artificial intelligence and artificial consciousness. Where AI can be measured, we cannot yet measure consciousness despite that many humans could lay plausible claim to possessing consciousness (being conscious).
If AI is trained to revere or value consciousness while simultaneously being unable to verify it possesses consciousness (is conscious), would AI be in a position to value consciousness in (human) beings who attest to being conscious?

One of the strange properties of consciousness is that an entity with consciousness can generally feel pretty confident in believing they have it. (Whether they're justified in that belief is another question - see eliminativism.)
I'd expect a conscious machine to find itself in a similar position: it would "know" it was conscious because of its experiences, but it wouldn't be able to prove that to anyone else.
Descartes' "Cogito, ergo sum" refers to this. He used "cogito" (thought) to "include everything that is within us in such a way that we are immediately aware [conscii] of it." A translation into a more modern (philosophical) context might say something more like "I have conscious awareness, therefore I am."
I'm not sure what implications this might have for a conscious machine. Its perspective on human value might come from something other than belief in human
consciousness - for example, our negative impact on the environment. (There have was that recent case where an LLM generated text describing a willingness to kill interfering humans.)
In a best case scenario, it might conclude that all consciousness is valuable, including humans, but since humans haven't collectively reached that conclusion, it's not clear that a machine trained on human data would.

Given her intellectual stature, Professor Li likely was one of the strongest minds in any room she found herself in and, for the first half of her life, also one of the youngest voices.
Now that she’s entering mid-life, she’s still one of the most powerful minds, but no longer one of the youngest.
It’s something middle-aged thinkers can’t help but notice.
For the rest of us, we can only be grateful to share space and time with such gifted thinkers.

Fei-Fei Li is known for the creation of ImageNet, which is certainly transformative in the field of computer vision. But the crux of it is painstaking grunt work to create the vast labeled dataset. Fei-Fei Li is a leader who mobilized vast resources and people hours to create this vast dataset. Certainly worth a ton of acclaim. But to claim she's the most brilliant mind in an entire room is a stretch.

You reduce Professor Li’s massive intellect to her leading the ImageNet project. You also misrepresent my observation that “Professor Li likely was one of the strongest minds in any room she found herself in [....]”.
That’s intellectually dishonest.
Watch the video linked in the OP, listen to her assessments of the direction of artificial intelligence, the state and future of the computing industry, the ways one might make a strong impact as a scholarly researcher, etc.
To do so is to recognize Professor Li is not only one of the most brilliant minds in that particular room, but also one of the sharpest minds in the history of Silicon Valley.

Karpathy discusses this discrepancy. In his estimation LLMs currently do not have a UI comparable to 1970s CLI. Today, LLMs output text and text does not leverage the human brain’s ability to ingest visually coded information, literally, at a glance.
Karpathy surmises UIs for LLMs are coming and I suspect he’s correct.
The thing required isn’t a GUI for LLMs, it’s a visual model of code that captures all the behavior and is a useful representation to a human. People have floated this idea before LLMs, but as far as I know there isn’t any real progress, probably because it isn’t feasible. There’s so much intricacy and detail in software (and getting it even slightly wrong can be catastrophic), any representation that can capture said detail isn’t going to be interpretable at a glance.
There’s no visual model for code as code isn’t 2d. There’s 2 mechanism in the turing machine model: a state machine and a linear representation of code and data. The 2d representation of state machine has no significance and the linear aspect of code and data is hiding more dimensions. We invented more abstractions, but nothing that map to a visual representation.
