i believe pineapple pizza is a favorite and they'll eat the whole damn thing.

The article says "individual cells within MMB consortia are not genetically identical, they differ slightly in their genetic blueprint."

Love the writing as well as the content here.

Especially fascinated by the coordinated replication.

Also curious about magnetotactics - why would such a small scale organism need to orient to such a large scale phenomenon (the earth's magnetic field)? Wouldn't it make more sense for this electromagnetic sense to be used for smaller scale orientation in their environment?

Magnetotaxis in bacteria (and some protist) is passive. The organism will biomineralize a ferromagnetic mineral, such as magnetite or greigite, and in a magnetic field they will passively orientate. This is not active orientation, meaning that even when the organism is dead it will still orientate in the field.

Their movement in the magnetic field is however active. The theory behind the magnetotaxis is that it allows them to know what direction is up. In the northern hemisphere, the magnetic poles come in from above and go down. So to a bacterium, North is down.

Why care what direction North is? if you are sensitive to oxygen, which MMB are, and oxygen diffuses in from the atmosphere above, your magnetotaxis would tell you the direction to swim to get away from toxic levels of oxygen. Wild how evolution works!

"Places like Alabama, practically the only way women can get ahead is to either move out of state or keep marrying up."

This sounds like an assumption that a woman could not have a career or get ahead of her own accord without relying on a man. Is that the thrust or did I misinterpret? And if so is it because the culture of that state is so patriarchal that a woman cannot have opportunities? I'm American but I haven't been to Alabama.

Brain drain from the rural areas to urban ones is extremely real and is only getting more serious. It's an economic problem created by politics that lands on women harder. Marriage laws are patriarchal culture's answer to this. The mindset goes, "real men provide and care for their family and if they can't, it must be their fault." Cruelty is a feature, not a bug, and they're more than willing to apply it indiscriminately.

Fasting is a natural state. Food addiction is real, as is lack of discipline.

Just stop overeating. That's the magic bullet. Always has been.

What's not helpful is looking for weird workarounds all the time. Just stop eating so much.

Cool!

Now do it for cetaceans.

And how did you stop it?

Start from here :

Stop using Google search and use an AI. No more irrelevant results, no more ads. No more slop to wade through.

BTW I find Claude is great at making graphs and diagrams. If you pay ($20) you can hook it up to a local code base.

> No more slop to wade through.

Huh? More like "slop exclusively generated for you", right? I have seen so much garbage answers from chat AIs.

Any example code or blogs/docs that demonstrate making graphs/diagrams and/or hooking it up to a local code base?

I've been thinking about how this happens with human cognitive development. There's a constant reinforcement mechanism that simply compares one's predicted reality with actual reality. The machines lack an authoritative reality.

If we had to grade truthiness of data sources - our sight or other main senses would probably be #1. Some gossip we heard from a 6 year old is near the bottom.

We know how to grade these data sources based on longitudinal experience and they are graded on multiple axes. For instance Angela is wrong about most facts but always right about matters of the heart.
