The ability to report dangerous things to the proper authorities is one of the ways you know you live in a functional society.

That said, this whole topic brings up the question of "At what cost?" We won't see the macroeffects these have on our communities for quite a while. Our base insticts when it comes to how we should react when we see something off, are slowly changing.

I get keeping 'parent/child', but why is it so ridiculous to change 'blacklist'? It seems reasonable to not want to associate 'black' with 'bad/evil'.

Thinking about how we use the term 'blacklist' doesn't seem like much of a sacrifice on our part.

If you disagree, I would love to hear your logic.

We should also change all of these doubleplus ungood words: Black market Black magic Black Sabbath Black widow Black soul Black sheep Black eye Black mark Black rider Black out Black box Black book

I was triggered twice just typing this up.

If someone proposing using a better term than 'blacklist' makes you take an all-or-nothing reaction, it might be a case where if you have a hammer, everything you see is a nail.

Can't you empathise with people who identify as black and have to see phrases like "black magic" meaning evil while "white magic" is good? Why not start here? Are we only changing open ssl because it's easy?

If you don't like using the term, then by all means say 'evil magic'.

Black Friday.

> Thinking about how we use the term 'blacklist' doesn't seem like much of a sacrifice on our part.

Nor master, and whatever others terms one can come up with. I'm offended by your username, please change it.

At the end of the day it doesn't seem like it actually moves the world forward.

It seems reasonable to not want to associate 'black' with 'bad/evil'.

Is it? The term "black goods" is often used to refer to things like TVs, stereo systems, and HTPCs, because of what colour they often are, and that's not bad/evil at all.

...and are we going to start complaining about "dark mode" too...?

Thinking about a few terms that we use and then deciding "this term has no effect" or "this term reinforces prejudices" is not a great Sisyphean task. Not all terms that have to do with color are inherently prejudiced or exclusionary. Common sense can still reign while being honest about the etymology of our words.

This is assuming you are asking in good faith, and not to trivialize and silence people who disagree with you.

Consider that black people in America do not have the luxury of forgetting about race.

Consider that this is a lie being peddled both to black people and to white people.

Do you have a lot of life experience speaking with black Americans about this subject?

You're thinking too charitably. HN has its share of actual white supremacists.

oh, come on. Frankly, I think demonizing each other is the real damage being done online and in the media lately.

I'm happy to admit I downvoted the above comment because it's jumping to conclusions and charged with hyperbole.

I think what's more concerning is the decisive language and open calls for conflict I've seen on social media. ...and I think we need to really pause for a moment and remember back, maybe 5-6 years ago to see how we got here...

When Obama was President, the ADL reported that there were, maybe 2000, Nazis and KKK members in the US. Tho THOUSAND. That's it. No one talked about the KKK or Nazis. How did we go from that to people accusing anyone who disagrees with them of being a Nazi?

At first, I was surprised that certain things became more mainstream on Reddit - like the open disdain for the concept of "compromise", the acceptance that their own news sources are biased, and the downward spiral of political posts to simply posting insults - there isn't even an effort to make an argument anymore.

Initially, I chalked it up to the extremist tendency of the two-party system - but I'm starting to think there is something more sinister going on. There are too many new accounts demanding violence. Too many international posters with no skin in the game voting for the worst responses. Too many threads where people refuse to discuss and talk only about punitive, and often violent, actions. This is conveniently exactly what the FBI reported Russian online teams were doing4 years ago. Maybe they're still at it?

I hope you'll join me in not throwing name calling around. Encouraging more intelligent discourse - at least on HN? ...and try to believe me when I say that I honestly believe(d) some idiot intern just posted an upside-down red triangle.

What conclusions does it jump to?

> No one talked about the KKK or Nazis.

You're very much mistaken. You weren't talking about the KKK or Nazis:

I've lurked on HN for over 10 years including making an unsuccessful YC application. It's remarkable how the general quality of arguments is increasingly aligned along parroting political groupthink on all extremes.

However, as a non-white male the most alarming observation is the blatantly xenophobic, anti-immigrant rationalising of white supremacy. Perhaps the most brazen exampel of this was vitriolic anti-immigrant comments following the mass shooting in New Zealand from a particular software developer I happen to know personally in real life on here. He obviously does not know this but I've kept a screenshot of those comments to remind myself about the true nature of people.

Oh please.

The fear mongering that white supremacists are everywhere has got to stop. Disagreement via downvoting does not equate to white supremacy. I wish people would comment more instead of downvoting myself, but I don't agree with your hyperbole.

Hello :-) My interpretation is not that it is that it is everywhere, but rather that it has a depressingly large influence and impact.

The problem with keeping your head down and getting things done without "raising a fuss" is that people will see that and assume racism isn't a serious problem. You'll even see people here wondering what all the fuss is about, or wondering how being black in America is any different than being Vietnamese.

The reason why you can easily pursue those things now is because you optimized for money earlier.

It still is about salary. Except now you can self-actualize since you got the more base pleasures out of your system earlier.

One day you will appreciate your paycheck. That day is not today.

I very much appreciate it, which is why I cherish its contents. The Tesla ended up being cheaper for my commute than most gas cars, so I at least have an excuse.

The term "incognito" doesn't always mean "I can't be identified", but it looks like those are the grounds.

I wouldn't be surprised if they get an inconsequential slap on the wrist.

I'm curious, every other browser has a similar mode. Is the same thing not an issue in other browsers? Do analytics packages not track you in Firefox Private browsing? Do other non-Google analytics not track you in Chrome?

What's specific to Google/Chrome here that's not true with every other browser/analytics platform?

I imagine anyone who tries to brand it as "I can't be identified" might be sued too. Who knows how successful they will be.

I doubt it would be worth the effort for browsers that don't have a huge market share. For example, a suit against Opera would be ineffective in the grand scheme...as most aren't aware of its existence.

Where is the "can't be identified" line come from? The branding is, word for word:

> Now you can browse privately, and other people who use this device won't see your activity

and

> Your activity might still be visible to: Websites you visit

Where does that piece of branding you mention come from? I don't see it anywhere? Did Google remove it recently? Or is it just what people, through the telephone game, have come to think it means?

Incentive.

Here I am still stuck with v2 on Linux Mint.

I'm still on 2 too, mostly because I recall being unable to use the plugin interface ionsome early version of 3, in late 2018; not sure if it was being reworkwd on or whatnot, but since I had been using MS to author some books and lessons for my students, I was already relying on the scripting, with no time to learn something new or wait for the APIs to work again. Since I'm stuck in this version limbo, I use a library I wrote in Python to manipulate mscx files. I think thos is also a mini-rant on how little FOSS software seems to care about backwards conpatibility. Still, v2 still is much better than any other notation software I tried so I'm not switching.

Why not just download the appimage?

Are these ideal Nigerians you're referring to from poor families? Or are their parents upper-middle class?

I don't really know any nigerians and I haven't ready any research that breaks this down by income.

Generally their parents are generals or kings, according to my mailbox.
