Awesome TED talk touching on similar topics. I would recommend if you haven't watched/heard it yet. http://www.ted.com/talks/bryan_stevenson_we_need_to_talk_abo...

We can learn so much from watching children: creativity, determination, love, honesty, etc.. A lot of people look at having kids as an obstacle to their careers. I found the opposite to be true. I've learned so much from playing with them. That combined with the desire to set a good example for them makes me push harder in everything I do.

Smallest what? There's no DOCTYPE.

It's worth adding that the DOCTYPE is what specifies what HTML rendering engine IE 7 and 8 use. A document without the DOCTYPE directive will render in quirks mode, and nobody wants that.

Don't forget about the Java Posse - http://javaposse.com/

Great read! I was starting to lose faith in all these "zen" life tips. This was a good one.

I never heard of this. It sounds like a really cool experiment. I might have to try this out with my watch. I don't wear bracelets and I don't plan on starting.

I don't wear bracelets either. I don't wear a watch. I'm a minimalist, and find such accessories very annoying. So wearing the bracelet became my very first constant reminder of something not to complain about.

As consolation to myself, I use a paracord bracelet that could be disassembled into survival equipment of a thousand uses if needed.

I prefer to try something new each time a start with a new language. I don't see the reasoning behind recreating when you can try something new. New language, new idea. Kill two birds.

I came to this same conclusion recently. It's great to spend time with the kids but there's a lot to be said for setting an example. I changed jobs to be closer to home after my second child was born. It's been over a year now and I'm realizing that being a good father is not just about spending quality time with your kids. It's also about teaching our kids to follow their dreams and find work that they truly enjoy. What better way to teach them this? This is why I'm making an effort to change my situation ASAP.

Jonathan Coulton comes to mind. He left his boring job as a programmer to pursue music as a way to make a living. He does not sacrifice family time for his "dream", but provides an example of a dad doing something he enjoys to make money for the family while having fun with the family.

My situation is a little different. I actually enjoy programming. What I miss is the satisfaction of building solutions to real problems and working with other developers who are as passionate and dedicated their work as I am. We put a lot of effort into becoming the best we can. It's nice to have the opportunity to put those skills to good use.
