The emails clearly show that Elon had no interest on this being a non profit. Especially because he advocated for OpenAI to be absorbed by Tesla multiple times. The only reason he is suing is because xAI is dead and he needs some AI love.

He's not asking for money in the lawsuit, so what is it going to do? I thought it was for show in the first place, the goal was to hold them to their founding principles. Which are of course, pretty subjective. Top to bottom it's God complex over there and the secret justification for closed source was pretty ironic--we only found out this key unmentioned detail once the lawsuits start flying.

He is not asking for money because that would make it crystal clear he's after the money. In actuality, he is just bitter he missed the boat. He is not after the money, but the fame.

"For an award of restitution and/or disgorgement of any and all monies received by Defendants while they engaged in the unfair and improper practices described herein"

He claims he'll give all the money to charity, but he's certainly asking for money.

Is xAI dead? I thought he is very much invested in Grok.

This is such a ridiculous hyperbole, I am surprised it is the top comment on Hacker News. There are still 40 mn people in California, and people still move here.

- Housing is ridiculous -> pay can also be ridiculous. And housing can be cheap once you move out of Bay or Los Angeles

- Utilities are ridiculous --> You don't really pay that much because of temperate weather

- Political issues are rampant --> Not sure what this means. I mean, political issues are rampant everywhere. Have you seen Florida ? Whole politics is based on around being "anti woke". Or Texas ? Ridiculous stunt (flying migrants, banning abortions). I prefer not to live in a Christian theocracy

- Homeless and crimes everywhere --> Do you get your news from Fox ? There is like zero homelessness and very little crime outside of very large cities. Even in SF, once you are out of downtown, there is very little homelessness. In fact, SF has some of the lowest violent crime rates

- Own a car and bike is a hassle --> LOL, what ? Is that why every family has multiple cars and bikes ? And is by far the leading EV ownership rates in the US ?

- Racial and political ideologues.... --> Again reads like a Fox news headline. Perhaps you prefer the book banning ideologies and "benefits of slavery" being taught elsewhere. My kid goes to a public school here and it is amazing the amount of effort is put in to be inclusive

- One can lose entire livelihood.... --> Can't even, insanely ridiculous

> I am surprised it is the top comment on Hacker News

Sadly not too surprising if you have followed this forum over the last few years. It is still great for certain topics, but for several others the top voted comments are all just the standard talking points pushed to Fox News hosts.

Am I out of touch? No, it must have been the others who are wrong.

I have lived in Houston and the bay area. Comparing the two, I prefer Houston.

Like I said, pay is only ridiculous if you are in software. For the vast majority of other profession, what is ridiculous are the prices and taxes levied on them.

The matter with politics might be subjective. But imo, all the stunts and stupid things the "Christian theocracy" are doing do not affect the majority of people living in Texas. The kind of regulations and political stunts in CA on the other hand directly affect the middle class. Affirmative actions and the DEI overreach have more effects on an average person's life than bussing migrants around and banning children's books. One is an inconvenience. The other potentially involves job loss and large changes in life. That is my view.

Also, before you jump to conclusion. I am a minority in STEM and I consider myself agnostic. The most extreme examples of the "Christian theocracy" you mentioned only happen rarely and personally I was never affected by any of them even though I should by the type of demographic they are allegedly targeting. In SF though, I am directly affected by the taxes and fees to pay for homelessness and DEI issues while still worried on my way home about crimes and whether my car's windows were smashed or not. And homelessness is still an issue even in the suburb like Brisbane and Daly City.

Putting undernourished and sick children on a multiple days long bus ride to Chicago, causing their death, is "an inconvenience"? Maybe to you. Sounds like you just found your kind of people...

What was the cause of death? Before you start ad hominem attacks, best to get your facts straight. Or maybe you are more concerned with outrage and tribalism than knowing what actually happened.

Food and water and medical attention were provided. Consent was obtained. Nobody was forced on the bus. Autopsy was inconclusive. This happened once in 30,000. Those are facts.

If the child died because she was put in an air-conditioned vehicle with food and water, then not much would have changed if she was to stay at the detainment facility where condition is just the same.

Here is a little-known fact you probably don't know: migrants choose which destination they want to go to, i.e. which bus they will board. Many of them took the bus voluntarily because they want to get to other cities for cheap and the bus is basically free. It is almost a public service for them. At the bus destination, often there will be arrangements to accommodate them, either by connecting them to their family, providing assistance, or routing to other destinations of their choice. Did you know that or you thought they were herded like cattle on a bus and dropped off in unknown locations that they know nothing about?

Yeah... Sounds like you found your people. Glad you live far away from me.

But doesn't alcohol trigger a wildly different reaction than hard drugs ? Which alcohol triggers schizophrenia, psychosis, hallucination and make you violent ? And these are triggered very very easily by using a small amount of meth or fentanyl. To get to a comparable state with alcohol, you would have to drink copious amount, but then you are more likely to be passed out than exhibit violent behavior.

I agree with your other point though - permissiveness of use shouldn't come with ignoring all societal norms, just because you are a vulnerable drug user. In fact, permissiveness of use should be paired with stricter enforcement of quality of life laws

> Which alcohol triggers schizophrenia, psychosis, hallucination

Sounds like acute ethanol withdrawal aka delirium tremens https://g.co/kgs/BHB6p9

> and make you violent ?

People getting violent with alcohol doesn’t need a citation I trust?

These are basically all the arguments for prohibition. Temperance movements work but legal prohibition doesn’t seem to.

I have used amphetamines extremely heavily for many years and I have never at any time been violent, with or without substances. I also didn't steal, or scam people, or otherwise harm anyone.

When I did meth, I stayed at home and talked on IRC, worked on programming projects, like an IRC bot written in Python. Sometimes I tinkered with Linux stuff, I had a raspberry pi that I ran the IRC bot on.

I played video games sometimes, mainly TF2, insurgency (standalone not sandstorm), a little bit of CS:GO. Probably some others too that I can't remember.

Other than doing that, the only other thing I did is go to work or go shopping or whatever was required. I did not have any problems at work or at the stores.

I actually almost never left my house except to go to work, I have been diagnosed as agoraphobic but I'm not totally sure about it.

Anyways, why exactly should I be put in prison for doing amphetamine and hanging out at home? Who exactly am I harming, or putting at risk of harm?

I do realize that not all cases are like mine, and there are cases where users put other people at risk, but you can't make blanket statements like this and just say "put those violent amphetamine users in prison!" without harming a lot of people who don't deserve it.

I think that the level of antisocial behavior the person exhibits should be taken into account before punishing them is my point, rather than just labeling them as bad because they use $scary-drug.

"Why should I get a fine for speeding when I was doing 150mph on an empty highway at night? I wasn't endangering anybody, and I have lots of experience driving cars fast!"

Yes, being in my room and talking on IRC is exactly equal to driving 150mph on the highway. I'm glad we've cleared that up.

Are we just ignoring the whole thing about violent drunks right now? Alcohol and violence are highly correlated.

I thinking to stop drinking, but I still sway

> But doesn't alcohol trigger a wildly different reaction than hard drugs ? Which alcohol triggers schizophrenia, psychosis, hallucination and make you violent ?

Every one of them does. Except triggering schizophrenia maybe, which is barely comforting.

> And these are triggered very very easily by using a small amount of meth or fentanyl.

But you're replying to a comment about pot, thereby shifting some goalposts.

Teslas absolute don't have long-lasting materials or great reliability or great performance. There have been hundreds of thousands of articles and experience about poor materials, build quality, reliability etc. I have owned both a Model S and Model 3, and I did own them because I wanted to support an EV maker, but they are by far some of the worst made cars I have owned. I switched back to a BMW EV and its like night and day.

Not my experience. Let me add that at first, I thought the materials and build of my first Tesla felt "cheap" and "plasticky." Over time, however, I've been pleasantly surprised at how well they've held up.

My oldest Tesla is now three years old, and it still looks and feels new. I could never say that about the BMWs, MBs, and Porsches I've owned over the years.

Tesla is one of the least reliable brands you can buy: https://www.jdpower.com/business/press-releases/2023-us-vehi...

Only Ford/Lincoln, Audi, and Land Rover are worse—all notoriously unreliable brands.

Consumer Reports and others have found that most of the "issues" reported with EVs in these rankings are software glitches, often solvable with a reboot or an over-the-air software update: https://www.greencars.com/expert-insights/are-electric-cars-...

Those findings are consistent with my experience.

“The organization also found that Tesla, which is often lauded for its sophisticated technology, was not a paragon of reliability, ranking dead-last among brands”

New survey by Bloomberg (published today!) finds Tesla's five-year reliability to be exceptional: https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2023-tesla-survey/model-3... (https://archive.li/rkT9X)

Consistent with my experience.

That's just a re-stating of the same ridiculous source data that declares any issue, no matter how trivial, to be of equal weight. It's also effectively punishing the carmakers who acknowledge and fix problems.

You are extremely biased. I have both owned a Tesla and non Tesla EV. Non Tesla EVs are way more conservative in their range estimates and you can actually beat their estimates. People routinely beat BMWs advertised EPA range - something you will never hear for a Tesla

I had a Mazda 3 once which would routinely beat its EPA estimates, especially highway driving. You are too forgiving of Tesla's business gimmicks

I have the BMW i4, and I would echo the same comment. BMW is extremely conservative with range estimates and would almost certainly meet or beat their range estimates.

When I used own a Model S, it nearly left me stranded in a mountainous highway, in winter with its optimistic range meter. Ultimately, I had to drift behind a truck, drive at 45 mph, and reach the Supercharger with 2% charge remaining.

PayPal was not founded by Elon. SolarCity was run by his brother / cousin (?) and was about to go bankrupt before being questionably acquired by Tesla. Boring is not a thing. Even Tesla wasn't founded by him. So his track record is really creating SpaceX (and jury is still out on long term success) and executing on Tesla (where technology, concept was founded by someone else).

Is this the Alphabet X or the Elon X ?
