Ambition and insecurity are two sides of the same coin, imo. These books helped me alot personally:

"Freedom from the known" - Jiddu Krishnamurti and "Power of Now" - Eckhart Tolle

I think it's healthy to pursue goals and improve your life situation. But don't let it become your identity or expect lasting peace from it.

Pay down all debt. Cut down on expenses. Sell most of your possessions. Invest in stocks/crypto. Take a few months rest without any digital obligations and reset your health. Good luck.

Go join wsb. Yolo on options and make it 5x.

When it comes to someone asking for life advice on HN, let's not play games.

WSB is a terrible idea for someone looking for financial security and next steps.

If OP is looking to retire as quickly as possible, this is a method that might work. It's just high risk.

This strategy is my only hope to retire early. At least OP is making so much money that he could retire in early even without investing. I'm also 8 years in and have less than a quarter of that (and I live frugally).

Apologies for piggybacking on the original question but couldn't pass up the opportunity to ask the daytrading crowd.

Would you publicly post price predictions/odds to get ranked alongside other traders via Brier scores?

People won't because most of them lose.

Just curious, how are you handling the legality if at all :) Are "popularity contests" considered sweepstakes or lotteries?

something akin to 'reward points', but yeah...it's a bit of a grey area! Cadoo.io is doing a similar thing with exercise and they treat it legally as 'loyalty points' but in reality it's prizes. It's one of the big unknowns about the model to be honest - we kind of hope that it will seen more like a community finance initiative or a business cooperative.

Reason I ask is I'm facing a similar issue with an app I'm launching.

My research has led me to this and from what you've said, you might be in the "lottery" zone despite trying to be a "sweepstakes".

Thanks, this was a really helpful link. In the case of HackerStash I'm confident it falls within the definition of a contest, and not sweepstakes or lottery. There are a few areas where this could be tightened up and the article will help with that, but likewise we've met all the criteria set out in the article other than terms relating to 'what happens to prizes if someone dies'. We'll have something added there!

Curious about what you're working on now, feel free to come join HackerStash and share your progress ;) haha

Definitely. But costs do add up if you go thru alot.

Good point. But it does something to know that an old book of mine will go to a specific requester instead being part of a bulk donation.

Thanks for the link. I was thinking more of a direct exchange of hours rather than a "lending." Seems to align more incentives that way.

A Philosophy of Software Design - John Ousterhout

Try meditation. It is literally meant to quiet ego-based thinking. Maybe it will help you approach problems with clarity after.

For me, the concepts "feedback loop from hell" and "expecting a positive is a negative" from the book "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck" were gamechangers.

Hmm - I've tried meditating for 5 or 10 minutes with limited success. Is meditating for more than that qualitatively different?

Def. not an expert and from what I gathered, it's a lifelong effort. But for me, it takes a few min just to concentrate on the breath and remind myself to observe my thoughts, emotions as separate from my self-awareness. So maybe try extending your sessions to 20-30 min before/after sleeping?
