My biggest sadness is wishing that it was easier and more accessible to build stuff like this on iOS. Making things and distributing to the App Store is an absolute nightmare. Of course that’s also what makes it so much better than almost every other App Store. But they still let trash in.

I’m not sure what the right balance is, and maybe this is the right balance.

I actually really enjoyed reading the summary as my brain didn’t really grasp the abstract.

You’re correct, but we’re discussing the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict, not a genocide. While it may feel good to use evocative words to spark emotion in others, you’re going to have to cite sources and provide an argument if you want us to earnestly consider your point of view.

The ICJ is having hearings over the genocide in Gaza.

The ICJ is also anything but neutral. The UN General Assembly elects the judges. The UN general assembly that has 164 resolutions against Israel, and ...

https://unwatch.org/un-general-assembly-rejects-motion-to-co...

Names aside an organisation whatever you want, but this organisation is anything but neutral. If Israel does not get fair treatment from the people assigning the judges here. And while Israel will go there, they will not accept the judgement of the court (which is the right of any country). And ... the complaint submitted by South Africa is full of factual inaccuracies and, frankly, reads like a rant. Read for yourself here:

https://www.icj-cij.org/case/192

It is a total rant, for example, it directly accuses the U.S. of genocidal acts in Gaza for "failing to use it's influence". It contains outright lies about statements made by officials.

Interestingly, wikipedia has a pretty neutral article on the subject:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestinian_genocide_accusatio...

I think that’s pretty obvious though. At least in my circles, the main talking point is the fact that this war goes back literally to the dawn of human civilization in this area. People who think this sparked in the last 100 years aren’t paying attention.

100 years ago is when western powers became involved and created the conditions for the current situation. So any comparison between the pre-british and period and everything that has happened since is quite harebrained.

False. The conflict in the Middle East between Israel and every other Arab nation has literally been present since biblical times. The names have changed, but the game remains the same. We’re just witnessing the current iteration of this same conflict.

EVs have to be a superior product (read: including the infrastructure) before the majority of people will switch to them, plain and simple.

The US Navy would like a word.

You seem to have a serious misconception about either the US Navy or the oceans.

There are actually satellites that do it. Over the course of many days. And it's not easy or quick to act on their feedback. Something like a military or police patrol simply can not happen.

This isn't true at all. I worked for a long time on the first implementation of the Navy's Maritime Domain Awareness System and my wife currently works for the NRO's Enterprise Collection Orchestration system that auto-tasks orbital surveillance platforms in response to automatically detected global events. Many of the capabilities are classified, but I can assure the US Navy both knows about and has some means to respond quickly (not necessarily by dispatching a manned vessel) to anything bigger than a driftwood log that appears on an Earth ocean.

The reason they don't is the Navy is not a law enforcement agency and this is not their mission.

I mean it could, but it would be pretty expensive. We know generally where ships go to fish. You watch those areas and get an idea of the various ships, you stage your ships nearby and wait. If you're really keen on being targeted you could follow ships back to port and over time have assets there wait to ID the individuals on the ship.

The problem is this would cost millions of dollars and take weeks or months unless you got very lucky. The Navy could do it in their sleep but why would they? Nobody who cares enough about this problem has the means to execute it, and nobody with the means cares.

Bro. I can’t tell if this is a joke or not. Outliers are a thing, there’s a good book on them. Your personal anecdote to your grandfather does not flip the table on all the research that clearly and definitively proves otherwise.

Beyond that, resistance training DOES combat stress. C’mon man. Some counter opinions just aren’t worth voicing.

I want you to tell me who is not an outlier on a bell curve? How flat is the bell curve? How tall is it? Aren’t really most of us outliers?

C'mon man, dude, bro just get with the program guy.

This guy gets it.

I’m way closer to paying for Kagi than I am to paying for Firefox. Sure “apples to oranges” and all that, but if Kagi slapped a coat of paint on a shitty electron app, gave me bookmarks, profiles (for dev testing a la containers in Firefox), and asked me to cough up $10-$15 / month for it? Done. Paid. Maybe even a tip on top.

What the hell does Firefox bring to the table? Sure they’re open source and “competition” to Google but come on… surely we can all see those aren’t features, they aren’t products, they’re bullet points.

Kagi actually does make their own browser (Mac-only and Webkit-based): https://kagi.com/orion/

It's everything that Firefox should be and misleadingly claims to be. Unlike Firefox, Orion actually has ad blocking by default.

Thanks for the kind words! Note that Orion is macOS/iOS only for now (we had to start somewhere).

Yet another reminder that social media is nothing but a social contagion on our society. Do not allow your kids on social media if you care for their long-term mental health!

Social Media is a part of the world now. Just like any danger in life, kids need to be able to recognize it and have the skills to deal with it - banning them would only make them more vulnerable in the long term.

Banning is useless, as you say it's part of the world now. However, there's something to be said about delaying or reducing their use of it. Too many children are getting social media very young (8 years old) and they are constantly connected to their peers, which is harmful. They need time away (both mentally and physically) from their peers and more time with family (rather than being ON social) to be able to develop as an individual.

Sex is part of the world and has been forever. We still should shield and heavily regulate any interaction between children and sex.

Because its improper usage is devastating and harmful.

It should be regulated just like alcohol and gambling.

We should accept foreign propaganda due to… hypocrisy? What does that even mean?

Due to freedom of speech being a core value of democracy and censorship/information control being a core value of authoritarianism.

> Due to freedom of speech being a core value of democracy

Freedom of speech != freedom to operate a company or platform.

Fair point. Banning a social media platform because of topics discussed though seems like a dangerous precedent to set. Seems like a free speech issue to me though.

I think most people are aware of the CCP influence on TikTok. I hope reports like these make people question if they’re being manipulated on the platform. People should always question the validity of the media they consume.

citizens rejecting foreign propaganda is a solid display of strength

Statistics and large numbers say that citizens will not do anything uniformly.

It would be nice if people universally rejected smoking, but there are social/economic benefits to banning it because statistics.
